Beautiful, historic rice plantation. The tour of the house was $7.50 and took about an hour. It was educational and interesting and the park ranger leading the tour was able to answer all the questions she was asked.
This is a great plantation to get a view of the Santee river that flows beside it and gives you a good idea when looking across how incredibly hard the slaves here had to work as they describe to you on many rice plantations. There are two burial sites at this plantation the first is called Sam Hill when you enter plantation grounds to your left it is still active today for ancestors of the slaves worked here; it is not part of the tour. The other is a family cemetery for the can of those who owned Hampton. “Hampton” the name for this plantation is from “Hampton on the Thames” in England.
A beautiful place to visit. We saw the 2017 eclipse here and the venue was very nicely prepared for the crowd.
This is a rice plantation so because of the marshes the mosquitoes during the summer are bad. The best time to go is during the cooler months.
Lovely old southern rice plantation!
I was devoured by mosquitoes and chiggers (?), red bugs (?)...looked down and hundreds were scurrying up my leg! I stripped down right there and used bottled water to get most off. Luckily the bathroom was open and had running water. That was 2 years ago. I still have scars from the bites. I will return...in February!
